USI Women's Golf: Stepping into the regional
spotlight
When Amanda Zehner (Henderson, Kentucky) hit her first shot in the
post-season, the NCAA Division II East Region caught a glimpse of what is to
come from the University of Southern Indiana women's golf team.
Zehner set the tone for the year with her first tournament last year. The
GLVC Freshman of the Year set the USI single-round and two-round records on the
opening weekend with a 154 (75-79) at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State
University. The sophomore also led the team with an 85.3 average in 22 rounds
and 11 tournaments.
The All-GLVC performer recorded her best tournament finish with a second-place
showing at the Bellarmine University Invitational in the spring. Her best finish
during the fall was sixth at the Cardinal Classic and seventh at the GLVC
Championships.
While Zehner was posting good individual totals, the Eagles also had three
players average under 90 for the first time since 1998-99. Zehner was joined in
the 80s by seniors Brandi Irvin (Benton, Illinois) and Jennifer Beaman
(Evansville, Indiana). The three combined for an 87.4 average, which is tied
for second all-time at USI.
Irvin averaged 87.7 and tied with Zehner in the fall with an 85.0 average. She
also tied for 10th in the GLVC Championships. Beaman averaged 89.3 over 19
rounds and had her best finish in the Lady Hawk Invitational, tying Irvin for
eighth.
The one thing USI had in 2002-03 that has been a weakness the last two seasons
is depth. The Eagles followed the top three with five players shooting in the
90s.
Rounding out the line-up during the spring was sophomores Tara Ulmer
(Bluffton, Indiana) and Carly Ellard (Evansville, Indiana). Ulmer lowered
her average nearly one stroke during the spring to finish her first season with
a 94.8, while Ellard dropped to 96.8 in the spring after shooting a 95.2 in the
fall.
The Eagles rounded out the roster with junior Megan Kries (Lebanon,
Indiana), who shot a 97.2, and sophomores Julia Sabatine (Muncie, Indiana)
and Megan Jung (Newburgh, Indiana), who shot 98.5 and 98.8, respectively.
Head coach Don Bisesi has added depth to the team with five freshmen newcomers in
2003-04.
Signing with USI last fall is Ashley Ramig (Milan, Indiana). Ramig was a four-sport performer at Milan High School and was a two-time regional qualifier and a three-time All-Sectional performer.
Jennifer Dragan (Brazil, Indiana) and Megan Pendergraff (Henderson, Kentucky) signed with coach Bisesi during the spring. Dragan helped Northview High School to the 2001 sectional and the 2002 regional titles, while Pendergraff was an Academic All-State performer and won the regional tournament as an individual in 2002.
Joining the team during the summer was Katie Jordan (Greenwood, Indiana) and Chelsey Swift (Attica, Indiana). Jordan comes to USI from Center Grove High School, while Swift will make the collegiate transition from Attica High School.
