USI soccer plays in GLVC/GLIAC Challenge
Who has the best conference – the Great Lakes Valley Conference or the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference? The NCAA Division II will find out about the soccer teams this weekend as four institutions from the GLVC and the GLIAC will meet in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team will get into action on Friday with a 4 p.m. match against Hillsdale (0-2) and will play the final match of the weekend against 14th ranked Grand Valley State University (2-0) at 3 p.m. Sunday.
After GVSU, USI has three more ranked teams – third ranked Northern Kentucky University, 19th ranked Mercyhurst College, and 25th ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville – remaining on the schedule.
The Screaming Eagles, who are 5-5 on neutral sites since the beginning of the program in 1996, will be attempting to win two-in-a-row to start the season for the fifth time in seven years. USI started the fall off on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over the University of Montevallo on August 30.
USI was led in the victory by the two-goal performance of junior forward Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas). Freshman forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) scored USI’s first goal of the year, just 1:29 into the match.
In addition to the institutions mentioned above, the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge will include the GLVC’s University of Indianapolis (tournament host), Quincy University, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the GLIAC’s Ferris State University.
