USI women’s soccer wins shootout
University of Southern Indiana (2-0-0): 4
Hillsdale College (0-3-0): 3
The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half to come from behind and defeat Hillsdale College, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI starts the year 2-0-0 for the fifth time in the seven-year history of the program.
The Screaming Eagles’ first comeback came at 26:36 of the first half as freshman forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) tied the game a 1-1, just two minutes after Hillsdale (0-3-0) had taken a 1-0 lead.
The Chargers retook the lead, 2-1, just before halftime on a goal at the 35:44.
The second half started off all USI as the Eagles scored their three unanswered tallies. Shetler started the scoring by picking up her second goal of the game and her third on the season to tie the match a 2-2.
Freshman back Amy Balczo (Evansville, Indiana) put USI in the lead for good with her first collegiate goal at 52:04, while sophomore midfielder Courtney Reeder (Carbondale, Illinois) sealed the victory with a goal at 82:04.
Hillsdale made a final charge at the Eagles as it finished the scoring for both team at 82:55 for the final score of 4-3.
“In the first half, we played disorganized and let them put the pressure on our defense,” said USI Head Coach Bill Wilkins. “During the second half, we had much better organization and forced them into turnovers that resulted in goals.”
The Eagles will have the day off on Saturday before resuming the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge Sunday, September 8, against 14th ranked Grand Valley State University at 3 p.m. in Indianapolis.
