USI Women’s Soccer to host Oakland City for Thursday night exhibition match
The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team will kick-off the 2003 season by hosting Oakland City University for an exhibition game Thursday, August 21, at Strassweg Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
Head coach Krissy Meek takes over the program after joining the USI coaching staff in February. Meek came to USI from the University of Evansville where she was an assistant coach. Under former Evansville head coach Mick Lyon, Meek helped to direct the Aces to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in 2001.
Leading the way for Meek is senior forward Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas) and sophomore forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana). Earle-Smith moved into the USI top-five all-time in assists in 2002 and has a chance to move in to the top five all-time in points and goals scored in 2003. Shetler ranked second on the team in her first season with 15 points on seven goals and one assist.
The Eagles were 8-10-0 overall, 3-7-0 in the GLVC, and missed the conference tournament for the second straight year in 2002. USI is picked to finish ninth in the GLVC Preseason Poll.
Oakland City was 7-6-0 last fall and will boast three players from Evansville (Emily Gries, a junior midfielder/forward from Reitz High School Lisa Seib, a sophomore midfielder from Reitz High School and Michelle Thomas, a sophomore back).
The women’s soccer team will be practicing at 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, and will be available to the media at 3:30 p.m. at Strassweg Field. For more information, contact the USI Sports Information at 812/465-1622.
