USI women’s soccer falls in overtime, 3-2

Evansville, IN – University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team lost its home opener in double overtime, 3-2, to Wheeling Jesuit University Sunday afternoon. USI falls to 0-3-0 in the 2004 campaign, while WJU goes to 3-0-0.
The Screaming Eagles drew first blood on a goal by junior forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) just 14:12 into the match. Shetler received a pass down on the right side of the field by freshman midfielder Julie Collins(Merrillville, Indiana) and scored on a break-away to give USI the 1-0 lead.
WJU bounced back with a pair of unanswered-unassisted goals by junior forward Meghan O’Rourke. O’Rourke, who scored both of her goals off attempted clears by the USI defense, picked up her first goal at 28:29 to tie the game 1-1 and gave WJU the lead, 2-1, just after halftime at 46:49.
Shetler scored her second goal of the afternoon to send the game into overtime with 7:31 to play. She also scored off an aborted try by the WJU defense to clear a ball out of the penalty area.
The game winner came off the foot of senior midfielder Lauren Deschamps. She picked up a loose ball just outside the penalty area and shot the ball over the outstretched arms of USI freshman goalkeeper Megan Homolla (Portage, Indiana).
The next chance for USI to get into the win column will be Tuesday when they host Tiffin University at Strassweg Field. Game time is 4 p.m.
