USI women's soccer will play first round match at Rockhurst
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team will travel to Kansas City, Missouri, to play Rockhurst University in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Sunday. USI will be making its first appearance in the league's post season tournament since 2000.
With the sweep of last weekend's homestand, the Screaming Eagles are going to post its first winning season since 2000. USI enters the GLVC Tournament with a 9-7-2 overall record and an 8-5-0 mark in the conference.
A big reason for the team's success this season is the surge of offense. The Eagles' goal production is up 43 percent over last year, led by sophomore forward Julie Collins
Collins ranks first in the GLVC with five game-winnings goals and fourth in the GLVC with 28 points on a team-best 11 goals and six assists. The 11 goals also rank fourth in the conference.
Senior forward Alisann Shetler
(Evansville, Indiana) follows Collins in the scoring column with 15 points on seven goals and one assist, while sophomore forward Katie Grossman
(Evansville, Indiana) is third with 14 points on six goals and two assists.
Shetler ranks third all-time at USI with 55 points on 25 career goals and five career assists.
Another significant improvement is on the defensive side of the field. Opponent goal production is down four goals from last year and the goal against average has declined from 2.07 to 1.83.
Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Meagan Homolla
(Portage, Indiana) had dropped her GAA nearly one goal per game this season. Homolla has a 1.73 GAA and a pair of shut outs in 18 matches.
Rockhurst finished the regular season with an 11-5-1 overall record, 8-4-1 GLVC. The Hawks defeated the Eagles two weeks ago, 3-1, in Kansas City.
