USI picked sixth in GLVC women's soccer preseason poll
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team is picked to place sixth in the GLVC in a preseason vote of the conference head coaches.
The Screaming Eagles once again have their sights set on winning the program's first GLVC Championship in 2006. USI took its first step toward that goal last fall when it reached the GLVC Tournament for the first time since the 2000 season. The Eagles also completed the 2005 year with its first winning season 9-8-2 overall record, 8-5-0 in the league since 2000.
Under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Krissy Engelbrecht
, USI is looking to keep moving up the GLVC standings after a fifth place showing last year. Englebrecht has directed the Eagles to a 21-29-3 record in three seasons, going 14-19-0 in the GLVC.
Leading USI into 2006 is one of the GLVC's top offensive and defensive weapons.
Offensively, the Eagles return second team All-GLVC junior forward Julie Collins
(Merrillville, Indiana). She led the Eagles and ranked sixth in the GLVC with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists. The 11 goals also ranked fifth in the GLVC and included five game-winning goals.
Defensively, honorable mention All-GLVC performer Meagan Homolla
(Portage, Indiana) leads the way for USI. The junior goalkeeper set a USI single-season record with 117 saves during 2005 and started all 19 matches. She also recorded a 1.68 Goals Against Average in 1550 minutes between the post.
The USI women's soccer team, which began preseason practice Monday, will scrimmage Southwestern Illinois College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Strassweg Field. The Eagles' play their only exhibition game August 15 at Indiana State University and kick-off the regular season August 25 at the Grand Valley State University Invitational.
