USI women's soccer travels to Western Illinois Friday
Screaming Eagles look for first win against Division I foe
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team continues its season-opening road trip when it plays Western Illinois University Friday evening in Macomb, Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles (0-1-0) are coming off a rough road trip to Michigan. USI lost a weather-delayed match to Saginaw Valley State University, 6-1, and saw its match with Northwood University cancelled.
USI sophomore midfielder Kara Georgeff (Highland, Indiana) scored the Eagles' first goal of the year in the second half of the loss to SVSU. She was assisted on the tally by junior midfielder Serena Loewenthal (Bloomington, Indiana).
The WIU Westerwinds, who were 11-7-1 in 2006, open their regular season schedule against USI Friday. WIU returns 79 percent of its offense from last year, including the top four scorers.
Returning to leading the WIU offense is junior midfielder Ashley Hoch, who had 15 points on three goals and nine assists. The Westerwinds also return their top goal scorers in senior defender Robyn Ruypers and senior midfielder/forward Misako Inaba, who had five goals each.
Friday's match between USI and WIU will be the first meeting between the two schools in women's soccer.
Following Friday's non-conference match, USI will play two GLVC contests on the road before opening the home half of the schedule September 14 when it hosts Saint Joseph's College. The USI-SJC match-up begins a five-match homestand for the Eagles.
