USI women's soccer hosts three non-conference matches
Eagles to host #1 Grand Valley State Saturday
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team exits GLVC play this week and will host three non-conference matches at Strassweg Field, including a match against NCAA Division II top-ranked Grand Valley State University Saturday at 1 p.m. The match against No. 1 GVSU will be the second time USI has played Division II's top ranked team.
Prior to welcoming GVSU (5-0-0) to Strassweg, USI (1-4-1) will host the University of North Alabama (4-3-0) Wednesday at 4 p.m. and complete non-conference home games against Tiffin University (6-3-0) Sunday at noon.
USI is 1-0-1 during the five-match home stand. The Screaming Eagles broke its four-match losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Saint Joseph's College Friday night and got into the win column with a 2-1 victory over the University of Indianapolis Sunday.
For the season, USI sophomore forward Julie Vaughan
(Evansville, Indiana) leads the Eagles in scoring with three points on one goal and one assist. Vaughan's goal was the game-winner against Indianapolis and the first of her collegiate career.
The Lions of UNA broke their own losing streak on Sunday, defeating Georgia Southwestern University, 1-0. UNA had lost three straight after starting the year with three wins in a row. UNA freshman forward Tassia Augusto leads the Lions in scoring with 20 points on eight goals and four assists.
This will be the first meeting between USI and UNA in women's soccer.
By time USI and GVSU play on Saturday, the top-ranked Lakers will have been idle for 10 days. Their last match was a 5-0 victory over the GLVC's Lewis University. GVSU is 4-0-0 against the GLVC this season.
Laker junior forward Katy Tafler leads GVSU with 19 points on eight goals and three assists, while junior goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio has a 0.18 goals against average between the posts.
GVSU, which was the NCAA II Tournament finalist last year, leads the all-time series with USI, 3-1-0. The Lakers won last year's match in Allendale, Michigan, 8-0.
The Dragons of Tiffin, who play at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University prior to coming to Strassweg Field, have won five of their last six matches after going 1-2-0 in the first three matches. Junior midfielder Renee Cain leads the Dragons in scoring with 14 points on four goals and six assists.
USI leads the all-time series with Tiffin, 2-0-1. The last time the two teams met was in 2005 when they played to a 3-3 tie in Tiffin, Ohio.
