USI women's soccer still in the hunt for playoff berth

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team enters the final weekend of the GLVC schedule still in the hunt for a spot in the conference tournament. Standing in USI's way is the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the University of Missouri-Rolla.

The Screaming Eagles (6-9-1, 4-6-1 GLVC) start the week tied for 10th in the league, one game back of the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College, who are tied for eighth. USI also is only two games back of seventh place UMSL, who visits Strassweg Field Friday at 5 p.m.

To qualify for the tournament, USI needs to win both matches this weekend for Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's to lose twice and/or for Bellarmine University to lose once.

Luckily, the Eagles are playing at Strassweg Field where they have dominated all season long. USI has amassed a record of 5-1-1 at home, with the only loss coming at the hands of number-one ranked Grand Valley State University.

The UMSL Tritons (8-6-2, 5-4-1 GLVC) start the week on a three-match winning streak and have won four of the last five. The Tritons, who were formerly known as the Riverwomen, lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 7-5-0, after posting a 2-0 victory last year.

USI finishes the regular season by hosting the Miners of UMR (4-10-1, 1-8-1 GLVC) for Senior Day Sunday at noon. The Eagles will honor seven seniors goalkeeper Meagan Homolla (Portage, Indiana) defenders Keri Land (Noblesville, Indiana), Jessica Stawick (Indianapolis, Indiana), Casey Alexander (Evansville,Indiana), and Mallory Minor (Evansville, Indiana) midfielder Katie Barisano (Evansville, Indiana) and forwards Katie Grossman (Evansville, Indiana) and Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana) prior to the game.

The Miners come to Strassweg trying to finish the season on a high note. UMR has only won once in its last five matches.

USI leads the all-time series with UMR, 3-2-0, after losing in overtime last year, 2-1, in Rolla, Missouri.
