Second-half goals end Eagles' GLVC hopes
Missouri-St. Louis (9-7-2, 6-5-1 GLVC): 2
at Southern Indiana (6-10-1, 4-7-1 GLVC): 0
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Missouri-St. Louis scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat the University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team, 2-0, and end the Screaming Eagles' chances of qualifying for the GLVC Tournament Friday evening at Strassweg Field.
USI (6-10-1, 4-7-1 GLVC) played strong, especially in the first half when it out-shot the Tritons 14-10.
The two teams were in a stalemate until the 63rd minute when UMSL's Amy Fox used a deflection off the top of Tara Reitz's head to put the ball in the back of the net for the match's first goal.
USI continued to press and had a solid opportunity in the final 10 minutes, but senior midfielder Katie Barisano (Newburgh, Indiana) missed a shot wide of the goal that would have tied the match.
The Tritons (9-7-2, 6-5-1 GLVC) capitalized on one of their five second-half corner kicks in the 89th minute when Anne Nesbit used a feed from Sierra Ellis to score UMSL's second goal and put the contest on ice.
Offensively, the Eagles amassed 21 shots, including six by sophomore forward Julie Vaughn (Evansville, Indiana). Five of Vaughn's six shots were on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Meagan Homolla (Portage, Indiana) led the Eagles' defense as she recorded 10 saves.
USI finishes the season Sunday when it hosts the University of Missouri-Rolla at noon. The Eagles will honors their eight seniors—Homolla Barisano defenders Keri Land (Noblesville, Indiana), Jessica Stawick (Indianapolis, Indiana), Casey Alexander (Evansville, Indiana), and Mallory Minor (Evansville, Indiana) and forwards Katie Grossman (Evansville, Indiana) and Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana)—prior to the contest as part of their Senior Day and Varsity Club Day festivities.
