USI womenís soccer fights off late rally to win preseason debut
University of Southern Indiana 3, @ Murray State University 2
The University of Southern Indiana womenís soccer team held off a late rally by NCAA Division I Murray State University to notch a 3-2 victory in a scrimmage earlier this afternoon at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
After a 30 minute stalemate to open the match, USI senior midfielder Kayla Scheller (Evansville, Indiana) put the ball in the net from 10 feet right of the goal. Schellerís goal was the only scoring done in the first half as the Screaming Eagles went into the break with a 1-0 lead over the Racers of Murray State.
USI wasted little time in the second half as senior forward Kristen Light (Florissant, Missouri) sailed a ball into the back of the net at the 55:15 mark. Less than four minutes later, sophomore forward/midfielder Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas) got her only shot of the game to go into the net from 25 feet.
Both goals proved to be costly for the Racers, who stormed back late in the contest to cut the USI lead to 3-2.
Junior goalkeeper Aude de La Salle (Gajoubert, France) played 57 minutes in front of the net before giving way to freshman Libby McKinney (Boonville, Indiana). La Salle was solid, giving up no goals and recording four saves.
USI will open its regular season Friday, August 31 as it plays host to Northern Michigan University. The Eagles will also host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Saturday, September 1. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at Strassweg Field.
