USI women’s soccer is back on winning track with 7-0 shutout

@University of Southern Indiana (1-2-0): 7
Brescia University (0-1-0): 0

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team got back on the winning track with a 7-0 victory over Brescia University at Strassweg Field Wednesday night. USI’s record goes to 1-2-0 for 2001, while Brescia falls to 0-1-0 in its season opener.

USI scored the eventual game winner at 23:28 of the first half on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Kayla Scheller (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was the first of the season for the senior.

The Screaming Eagles waited only 10 minutes before jumping out to the 2-0 lead they would take into halftime on a goal by junior back Jill Hejlek (St. Louis, Missouri) at 38:40. Hejlek scored her first goal of the season off a pass from junior forward Jenny Wessel (St. Louis, Missouri)

The Eagles did not wait long after halftime to make the score 3-0 on sophomore midfielder Aisha Earle-Smith’s (Spring, Texas) first tally of the season off a pass from senior forward Kristen Light (St. Louis, Missouri) at 51:46. Earle-Smith’s goal was followed seven minutes later at 58:28 when junior midfielder Megan Fitzler (Maryland Heights, Missouri) scored on a penalty kick to give USI a 4-0 cushion.

The scoring concluded for USI on the first goal of their USI careers by junior back Pleasant Lant (Chandler, Indiana), junior back Aimee Muller (Hilton, New York), and junior goalkeeper/forward Aude de LaSalle (France).

Lant scored off a pass from Scheller at 72:46, while Muller and de LaSalle scored on penalty kicks at 80:53 and 90:00, respectively. De La Salle, who played first half in goal for the Eagles without facing shot, played in the field for the first time as an Eagle in the second half.

This weekend, the Eagles begin a four-match road trip by traveling to Mankato, Minnesota, to play St. Cloud State University on Saturday, September 8, and Minnesota State University-Mankato on Sunday, September 9. Both games start at 11 a.m. and will be played at MSU-Mankato.

USI will open the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season Friday, September 14, at the University of Indianapolis before concluding the road trip Sunday, September 16, at Saint Joseph’s College.

The next home match will be Friday, September 21, when the University of Wisconsin-Parkside visits USI for a 5 p.m. match.
