USI women’s tennis has two advancing in ITA Regional
Senior Emily Blinzinger (Oakland City, Indiana) and freshman Ashley Rees (Vincennes, Indiana) advanced to the round of 16 at Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Great Lakes Region Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. The regional is sponsored by the University of Indianapolis and Omni Hotels.
Blinzinger, USI’s number one player who was seeded 13th, won her first round match 6-4 6-3 over Jenny Johannson of Northwood University. She advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Carrie Cragen of the University of Indianapolis.
Rees, USI’s number two player who was seeded 15th, started the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chrissy Yingst of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She continued to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Jennifer Spence of Saginaw Valley State University.
On Saturday, Blinzinger will take on third seeded Barbora Jilkova of Ferris State, while Rees will attempt to advance against Tara Tragesser of the University of Charleston.
USI had two players fall to Ferris State players in the first round. Junior Nichole Freyberger (Jasper, Indiana) fell at the hands of Sara Jane Johnston, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Junior Kathleen Davis (Sullivan, Indiana) dropped her first round match to Tessa Miller, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the teams of Blinzinger/Rees and Freyberger/Davis advanced through the first round. Blinzinger and Rees defeated Anna Humme and Jaclyn Johnston of Wayne State, 8-3 while Freyberger/Davis won 8-3 over Samantha Dodson and Brooke Kennedy of Saginaw Valley State.
The USI doubles teams did not make it through the second round, however. Blinzinger/Rees fell to the top seeded team of Jenny Johannson and Carina Kaempfer of Northwood University, 8-3. Freyberger/Davis also fell to a seeded team stumbling 8-1 to number seven Nikki Fairchild/Laura Sukup of Grand Valley State.
