2005-06 Women's Tennis Outlook
USI hopes to continue forward momentum
The University of Southern Indiana women's team hopes to continue its forward momentum it ended with last season by reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in three years.
USI posted a 14-6 record in 2004-05 on its way to the NCAA II Tournament. The Screaming Eagles placed second in the GLVC Tournament after finishing third in the regular season with a 7-2 league mark.
Head Coach Keely Porter, USI’s all-time winningest coach ( 135-74, .646), and the Eagles will begin the 2005-06 season with a strong base of six returning players. USI will have to replace only one of the starting six singles players and three players from the three doubles teams.
Three-time All-GLVC and Academic All-GLVC senior Ashley Rees leads the Eagles into action for the final time in 2005-06. Rees has a 40-23 singles record and a 38-25 doubles record during her collegiate career.
Last season's number two singles player was 11-8 in singles play and combined with a pair of partners to post a 16-8 doubles record.
Senior Cassy Froderman also is heading into her final season with the Eagles. Froderman, who has played in the number four singles, five singles and six singles during her career, enters the year with a 26-25 three-year singles record. She was 8-11 overall a year ago, seeing action at number five singles.
The Eagles are very solid in the middle of the singles line-up with sophomore Reilly Ackerman and junior Audra Bartelt, who combined for 29 singles wins last year.
Ackerman, who played number three singles, is the team's top returnee with a 15-8 overall record. The All-GLVC performer also combined with her sister, Kalie, to record a 9-8 mark at number three doubles.
Bartelt followed Ackerman in the singles line-up and was one victory behind with a 14-5 individual mark. She also combined with three different partners to accumulate an 8-1 doubles mark.
Sophomore Maggie Coffman anchored the USI number six singles spot in 2004-05. Coffman was 14-9 overall and was a team-best 8-1 in the GLVC. She also partnered with three different players in doubles play, going 9-8.
Returning to the squad this year is sophomore Emily Eubank. Eubank did not play in 2004-05, but will be looked to for a contribution in 2005-06.
New to the squad this fall is junior transfer Kimberly Decker as well as freshmen Leslie-Anne Eades and Emily Schum.
Decker transfers to USI from Broward Community College where she a member of two NJCAA national championship teams as well as a part of the 2003 NJCAA doubles championship duo.
Prior to attending BCC, Decker was a two-time All-State player at Brownsburg High School.
Eades and Schum begin their collegiate careers at USI after successful
prep careers. Eades was a six-time letter winner in helping lead Central
High School to four sectional championships, while Schum was a two-time Most
Valuable Player and All-Conference performer at Mt. Vernon High School.
