I want to apply for a grant. What should I do first?
Contact the
Sponsored
Research Office
to determine who will fund your project and to initiate the procedures for
administrative approval. USI subscribes to the IRIS and GrantSearch databases. The Sponsored Research Office also has information on other funding databases. Find links under Funding Opportunities.
I know of a funding source for my project. Do I need to contact
the Sponsored Research Office?
YES! The Sponsored Research Office will help you obtain University approval
for your project. Before being submitted, all grant proposals must have a
Sponsored Project Final Approval Form
(called the "blue sheet") filed in the Sponsored Research Office. On it the
project director must assure compliance with relevant University policies.
What if I don't understand the guidelines or cannot answer the
questions exactly?
Contact the sponsored research specialist for assistance in interpreting
grant program guidelines.
Who is authorized to sign grant proposal forms as Authorized
Institutional Representative or Sponsoring Group or Authorizing Official?
Effective June 1, 2001 the authorized institutional representative or
sponsoring group or authorizing official who will sign grant proposal
applications, forms, cover pages, approval forms, and regulatory or compliance
forms is the director of Sponsored Research, Peggy F. Harrel. The Sponsored
Research Office will help you obtain authorization and signatures.
Is it necessary to follow all the details in the program
guidelines?
ABSOLUTELY! Follow the guidelines meticulously, because the reviewers will.
Funding agencies report
What should I keep in mind when planning the budget?
At some point during the agency's evaluation of your grant application, the
budget will be the most important part. A flawed budget can result in
rejection. Give the best estimate possible--a padded budget will be detected
but an inadequate budget will reflect the applicant's inexperience. Bring a
list of anticipated expenses to the Sponsored Research Office and staff
will work with you. Other budget questions can be answered by the
Grant
Accountant.
What is USI's negotiated facilities and administrative cost rate?
Effective FY2004, 51 percent of direct salaries and wages (including vacation,
holiday, sick pay and other paid absences but excluding all other fringe
benefits) for all grants and contracts with the federal government. See the
Grant Accountant
for treatment of fringe benefits.
I will employ a student as a research assistant on my grant. What
do I need to do?
Contact Human Resources to establish the rate of pay for the position. Any
individual who receives payment for services under a grant typically must be
placed on payroll, as income may be subject to taxation. If the person
selected for the grant position is already employed by USI as a student, the
grant may affect his/her employment status. Contact Human Resources for
additional information and assistance.
My project will involve research using human subjects. What
should I do?
File a USI IRB
Application
with the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects of
Research (IRB) of the University before initiating research. The IRB is
responsible for reviewing all research or related activities which involve
humans as subjects proposed by any member of the USI faculty, staff, or
student body (whether full or part-time).
What services does the Sponsored Research Office provide?
