More about Abbas

What is your area of interest?

My area of interest, in broad terms, is the impact of information technology on decision making. My doctoral thesis examined the effect of computer/decision support system support on negotiations. This is an ongoing interest of mine, and since completing my doctorate in 1990, I have been engaged, in collaboration with colleagues from IU, Arizona State University, Washington State University, and St. Joseph’s University, in an ongoing series of laboratory studies that has examined the use of different types of computer and communication modes in negotiations.

I am also very fortunate to have interested colleagues and students, right here in the Collegel of Business, with whom I have often collaborated on research projects.

My research has focused on various aspects of eBusiness—the use of XML and XBRL languages, digital rights management, eSupply Chain Management, online auction, performance metrics for eBusiness, and Internet security. In addition, I have also studied important issues in the development of eBusiness undergraduate and MBA curricula, and the extent to which MBA curricula in colleges and universities in Indiana reflect the realities of the New Digital Economy. I have also examined how our state stands in developing the technology infrastructure, workforce, and economic environment necessary for success in the New Digital Economy of the 21st Century.

What are you currently working on in terms of research? What are the questions you are trying to answer?

My research centers around various aspects of the way business is conducted in the digital, globalized economy of the 21st century, including supply chain management; risk management and performance measurement issues in supply chain management; eProcurement; digital rights management issues in eBusiness' electronic reverse auctions; computerized negotiation support systems; and the impact of information technology, globalization, and the digital firm on business school and MBA structure and curricula.

If there is a single motto that serves as a guide for your career and life, what is it?

“Service above self.” This is actually the motto of the Rotary Club, of which I am a member. Just these three simple words say so much. I have found that the most rewarding moments come from working toward the betterment of others in our community. Chairing the Rotary Club of Evansville Education Committee for many years has given me a chance to work together with other Rotarians, as well as with EVSC and private/parochial school leaders, to offer programs that supplement and support the work of our local teachers and administrators in serving the needs of our school children.
