Web Services
USI Web Server
The University maintains its own web server that acts as the host for all files intended for publishing on the Internet. The web server is available for all colleges and departments to post information, promote programs, and streamline operations in such a way that benefits the University community.
The web server should not be considered a place to publish and/or store personal information that is not directly related to your role within the University.
Faculty and staff can request access to the USI web server through their respective dean or department director. Due to security issues, Web Services does not grant permission for students (student workers, interns, etc) to access the web server through their MyUSI account.
Access should be requested via email to webserv@usi.edu by the respective dean or department director. Requests should include:
- the person’s full name
- MyUSI user name
- the folder(s) – or web address – of the web site(s) in question
- whether web editing software (Expression Web) needs to be installed
Once approval is granted, the user(s) will need to “map” their computer to the folder(s) on the web server.
- Double click “My Computer”
- Select “Tools” from the menu
- Select “Map Network Drive…” from that drop down list
- Select an available “Drive:” letter
- Enter \\www\www_usi\foldername in the “Folder:” text box where foldername = the folder to which you are requesting access (ie: \\www\www_usi\president for access to the President’s web pages)
- Make sure the “Reconnect at login” box is checked
- Click “Finish”
A network icon will appear under “Network Drives” with the Drive letter and folder name you selected. NOTE: If you have requested access to more than one folder you will need to map and delineate a Drive letter for each one.
Now that you have access to the appropriate folder(s) and have gained permission to make changes to the pages within that folder, you will need web editing software. The Computer Center has secured licenses for Microsoft Expression Web at $50 per user and can be installed by your area technician.
*Mac users should contact Web Services to map network drives
Domain name requests
All web sites hosted on the USI web server adhere to the following naming protocol: http://www.usi.edu/foldername. In certain circumstances it is necessary to acquire a unique or third party domain name, however, if that domain name is going to point to a folder on the USI web server it must be administered through Web Services.
