2012 SwISTEM Workshops for Elementary, Middle and High School Teachers

Workshop sizes are limited--enroll early! When registering, please have the
course number available.

STEM Workshop in Entomology (Course Number STEM034)
Description: This workshop is geared towards elementary
teachers who wish to strengthen their science curricula, and middle and high
school science teachers who wish to enrich their biodiversity curricula.
The workshop will provide teachers with everything they need to collect and
produce an insect collection. Insect collecting supplies, educational
materials, and insect collections will be taken back to the classroom at the
conclusion of the workshop to share with students and to supplement science
biodiversity instruction. Several facilities and a simulator at Crane will
be toured during the workshop in addition to collecting and identifying insects.
Certificates indicating up to 56 hours of professional growth contact hours will be
awarded to participants. (15 slots available)
Location: The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC-Crane),
Crane, IN
Date: July 5-6 & 9-13, 2012

Rethinking Fractions with the Common Core Standards (Course Number 12SSTEM035)
Description:
Participants will explore hands-on approaches for teaching fractional concepts,
discuss best practices for teaching fractions through reflecting on video-based
cases of classroom sessions and students' mathematical thinking, learn about
common misconceptions students have about fractions, and collaborate to create
grade-appropriate lessons designed to help children develop conceptual
understanding. Certificates indicating up to 15 hours of professional growth
contact hours will be
awarded to participants. (24 slots available)
