Sexual Assault Prevention Programs
Overview
Sexual assault prevention and education programs are reviewed and advised by
a task force of university and community leaders in their field. Programs
are created and implemented to encourage student body participation in
the education and prevention of sexual assault and rape, which has or
will affect students, faculty or staff associated with USI at one point
in time or another.
Prevention and Safety Tips/Resources
Rape Aggression Defense Program
USI offers, through the Fitness
Center, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)
training to educate women about awareness, prevention, risk education, and
avoidance. RAD classes are designed to teach students and employees basic
self-defense techniques and to improve coordination. Additionally, RAD classes
help participants develop self-confidence and discipline, and increase
physical and mental capabilities. RAD is taught by certified instructors and
provides participants with a workbook/reference manual.
The class is offered in three, two-day sessions. Participants must attend both days to get the full effect from the program.
If you have questions about the RAD class or are interested in the program, please call the Fitness Center at 461-5268, or contact Glenna Bower.
Peer Educators
The Sexual Assault Peer Educators (SAPE) became a registered student
organization in November of 1998. This organization provides course training
in which the participants become certified sexual assault peer educators.
In order to become a certified SAPE, a USI student must commit to attend an intense 20-hour weekend training. During the course, participants learn valuable interpersonal skills such as active listening, leadership, communication and confrontation. The students also learn about the dynamics of sexual assault and rape, awareness, prevention, and survival. In addition, it teaches a student to learn how to effectively deal with individuals who have been a victim of sexual assault or rape as well as become a referral source.
SAPE works closely with the Sexual Assault Program at the Albion Fellows Bacon Center in Evansville in order to keep abreast of issues pertaining to sexual assault and rape.
To learn more about SAPE or the Albion Fellows Bacon Center please contact the Dean of Students Office at 464-1862.
