What experiences and/or who at USI inspired you to pursue a career in
Student Affairs?
I really enjoyed my time at USI. It was a time of self-discovery and
empowerment. I was lucky to have good advisors and supervisors who were
currently working in Student Affairs. Most importantly, I enjoyed working
with first-year students and sophomores, helping them navigate through the
college waters.
What did you do as an undergraduate to increase your student affairs
experience before going to graduate school?
I was SGA president, an active member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, an AMIGO,
member of Student Housing Association (SHA), a resident in housing, and worked
at the campus radio station as a news reporter, DJ, sportscaster, and news
director.
How did you go about researching the field and know where you wanted to go
to graduate school?
I talked a lot with my orientation supervisor, Eric Ramsey, and Dr. Parrent,
vice president for Student Affairs, about grad schools. I wanted to live
in a big city that was still close to home.
What education have you had since USI?
I graduated from the University of Louisville in 2005 with a Master's in
Educational Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in College Student Personnel.
I plan to start working on my Ph.D. after the 2006-07 academic year, possibly in
educational leadership or counseling.
What is your ultimate goal for a career in student affairs?
I would like to work in leadership development and one day be the director and
hopefully, a dean of students later on down the road.
What advice would you give a student interested in the field of student
affairs?
Being a staff member in student affairs is not always fun and games. It is
a lot of hard work and important to hold students accountable for their actions
even when you want to sit there and laugh, too. At the same time, don't be
afraid to show them who you are. Students relate to you better if you show
them that you are a real person, too.
