Frequently Asked Questions
In case you were wondering, this is what a lot of folks are asking about USI Summer School. Hope you find the answer you're looking for here...
I am not a USI student. Can I take Summer School classes?
Yes. Enrollment in summer courses is open to undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at other colleges and universities, high school students, international students, and individuals whose educational background and experience qualify them for the courses they wish to take.
I am a non-USI student attending another institution. Will my Summer School class credits transfer to my home school?
In most cases, the credits will transfer; however, it is up to students to get their summer school classes approved by an appropriate official at their home institution. The Indiana Core Transfer Library is a new resource on the web - listing all pre-approved courses transferable to and from Indiana colleges. Click here for more information about TransferIn.
I am a USI student. Do I need to fill out a Summer School application?
Current and returning University of Southern Indiana students can register for Summer Session courses online via MyUSI. New students can register during open registration on the following dates:
May 7th - First, second, and third summer sessions
June 11th - Second and third summer sessions
July 16th - Third summer session
What is the deadline for applying?
Students may apply as late as the first day of classes. Please be advised, however, that a late registration fee of $25.00 will be charged to any student who enrolls on/after the first day of a summer session. USI Summer School strongly encourages early application, especially for courses with limited enrollment (i.e. Mathematics and English Composition courses). Please also note that some courses require prerequisites or special permission from the instructor or department and these decisions may require more time.
Do I need to submit a transcript with my application?
All non-USI students, regardless of their current enrollment status, must submit an official copy of their most recent transcript to the USI Office of Admission along with the application.
I am a non-USI student and I want my credits to transfer to my home institution. At the end of the summer, do I need to request a transcript be sent to my home institution?
Yes, if you want to notify your school of your USI Summer School courses, you must mail or fax a completed “transcript request form” to the USI University Registrar's Office.
Will taking USI Summer School courses increase my chances of being accepted as a degree candidate to the University of Southern Indiana?
Acceptance to the Summer School does not constitute or imply acceptance as a degree candidate to any school or division of the University of Southern Indiana.
What are the requirements for International Students?
International students applying to the USI Summer School must have a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 525 or higher. If you would like to have your TOEFL scores mailed to the University directly from the testing company, list the code "1335" on your exam. Also, if you require an I-20 form to obtain a student visa, you must complete and submit and International Student Application to the Office of International Student Program which is to be returned to the Summer School before an I-20 can be issued to you. Accurate citizenship and visa-type information must be submitted in a timely fashion. Late applicants will be ineligible to register.
What is the maximum number of courses/credits I can take?
The maximum number of credits for which an undergraduate student may enroll in any given Summer Session is seven hours. Exceptions may be granted with approval from the student's Dean.
Can I audit Summer School classes?
Permission to audit an undergraduate course depends on space in the classroom and appropriateness of the class for audit. The audit application can be picked up in the Office of the Registrar during the published dates of late registration, and requires the signatures of the instructor of the course and the chair of the department which offers the course.
If you audit a course, your name will not appear on the class roster and no notation of the audit will be made on your permanent record. Auditors pay a $35 fee, plus any applicable lab fees and University services fees.
Are Summer School students eligible for financial aid?
The financial aid application (FAFSA) covers a 12-month period starting with fall and ending in following summer. If you have not exhausted your annual grant and loan eligibility by the end of the regular academic year, you may be eligible for summer financial aid. Summer is the same length as a regular semester and therefore has the same enrollment requirements. Half-time is at least 6 semester hours and student loans require at least half-time enrollment.
A separate Stafford Loan request form is required for summer. Grade level changes (e.g. sophomore to junior) at the end of spring often provide additional student loan eligibility. It is recommended that students meet with their financial aid counselors to determine summer eligibility for financial assistance before summer registration. Employment through Summer Work Study is available on a limited basis.
Is on-campus housing available during the summer months?
Yes. There are a number of housing options available to students enrolled in USI Summer School courses and programs. Please see the Residence Life website for further information.
