Dr. Nils Johansen
Biography:

Dr. Johansen came to the University of Southern Indiana in 1995 following his retirement as Professor of Geological Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In addition to his engineering teaching and research, Dr. Johansen has been active in developmental education and advising the last twenty years. He has been the Academic Skills Coordinator at USI and, as a member of the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) and the National Association for Academic Advising (NACADA), given numerous presentations at National meetings over the years. He has been active in teaching and research in the field of college preparedness for minorities, especially native Americans.

He has taught over 15 different college level courses these last 16years, ranging from the graduate level to teaching freshmen. This (Spring '11) semester he will be teaching College Study Strategies (Gens 105) and, in the University Core Curriculum, World Geography (Geog 330).

He is a fellow and past president of the Indiana Academy of Science, a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and an engineering program evaluator for the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC-ABET).

He is a retired Field Artillery reserve officer and a registered Professional Engineer in Alaska and Indiana.
