Outstanding Advisors: JoEllen Bush & Patricia Beagle

Two academic advisors in University Division Advising will be recognized for their outstanding advising at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conference in San Antonio, Texas this weekend.

JoEllen Bush is a recipient of a 2009 Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit in the Primary Advising category, while Patricia Beagle is a recipient of a 2009 Outstanding New Advisor Certificate of Merit in the Primary Advising category. They will be honored at NACADA'S Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising during the conference.

Dr. Brian Posler, assistant provost for Undergraduate Studies, said, “The fine work of these advisors is part of the reason that USI had record retention this year. University Division advisors work hard to improve the academic experience and success of first- and second-year students. It is nice to see them recognized nationally by their peers at NACADA."

Bush holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from USI. As a USI student, she was a student worker and a student mentor. After completing her bachelor's degree, Bush was a family case manager at the Posey County Office of Family and Children Services. She returned to USI in 1999 as an academic advisor for at-risk students. She is a member of NACADA, the National Association for Developmental Educators (NADE), and the Indiana Academic Advising Network (IAAN).  In addition to her advising responsibilities, Bush teaches Freshman Seminar and Career Planning.

Beagle holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science degree in education from USI. She joined the University in 2001 as an adjunct instructor in Academic Skills, teaching Strategies for College Reading, Applied Content Reading, College Study Strategies, and Career Planning, and transferred to University Division Advising in 2007. That year, she won a competitive scholarship to attend a week-long advising program in Austin, Texas. She is a member of NACADA and NADE.

Michael "Brody" Broshears, director of University Division, said, "This recognition is an affirmation of the quality work being done in University Division Advising. Both Patty and JoEllen are deserving recipients, and it means a lot to our unit to see them get national recognition."

The awards were announced in April. In sending the news to colleagues in the University Division, Renee Rowland, lead advisor in Academic Advising, said the announcement brought her "great pride and joy." Rowland herself received the Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit in 2007. She said, "[Bush and Beagle's] hard work is greatly appreciated. Please join me in congratulating them!"
