What is One-on-One?
One-on-One is a community tutoring program that pairs adult tutors with elementary school children in the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon. Tutors may read books to students, listen to the students read, assist with vocabulary words, or help with math skills. These are just a few of the numerous activities volunteer tutors can offer. Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, the tasks are determined by the needs of each student.

Why become a One-on-One tutor?
Our children need your interest, understanding, and involvement. One-on-One volunteers help students develop more positive attitudes toward school and academic achievement. They also are inspiring role models.

Who can volunteer?
Any adult working or living in the area is welcome to participate. For the safety of all involved, One-on-One will conduct a background security check on each volunteer.

When would I volunteer?
Volunteers serve during the regular school day, one hour or more each week on a regular basis during the school year.

Where can I volunteer?
You decide which school location is convenient for your schedule from the list of elementary schools that have requested volunteers.

Would you like to make a difference in a child's life?
The first step to becoming a One-on-One volunteer is to contact the Volunteer USI office at 812/465-1215 or VolunteerUSI@usi.edu and express your interest. You will be sent an application that includes the background check information. Once the application process is complete, we will provide you with the necessary forms: a list of schools and information on orientation sessions.

One-on-One is a collaboration of Volunteer USI, the USI Alumni Association, and the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation.
