Welcome Week

What is Welcome Week?

How does Welcome Week
differ from Orientation and
Southern Hospitality Day (SHD)?

Welcome Week is a series of events which enable you to become better acquainted with USI and meet hundreds of new students. It officially begins the evening of Thursday, August 27, 2009. All students are expected to attend the academic-based events on Friday, August 29. Attendance will provide you the jumpstart for your academic success. SHD gave you an overview of what USI has to offer and helped you decide if USI is the right fit for you.

Orientation provided you the opportunity to register for classes and learn more about USI's policies and procedures.

Welcome Week activities, workshops, and events planned are designed to welcome you to your new home and prepare you for your first week of classes by offering the following opportunities:

  • to meet peers thereby developing long-lasting relationships
  • to learn about faculty, departmental, and University expectations
  • to help make the transition to college life easier
  • to introduce you to University resources
  • to have FUN!

...and loads of other fun activities to get you pumped for your first year of college.

When is Welcome Week?

Welcome Week starts August 27, and lasts until September 2. However, other programs are typically scheduled throughout the first week of classes.

Who attends Welcome Week?

All new students are expected to attend Welcome Week activities, especially the academic-based sessions on Friday, August 28. We know new students are concerned about "fitting in" and the academic rigors of college life. Welcome Week will ease your fears and help you reach your goals.

Should I attend Welcome Week
if I am a commuter?

 What happens at Welcome Week?

Yes! We know sometimes it can be more difficult for commuter students to feel connected to the University. The less connected you feel, the less likely you are to "experience the college life." There are special programs planned for USI's commuter students. We want you to meet other commuters and learn how to get involved and experience campus life. You can do all of this without living on campus. Welcome Week gives you the first taste of being a student at the University of Southern Indiana. It is a week packed full of activities and events designed to help you meet other new students, get adjusted to your surroundings, and set you off on the right foot to start your academic career at USI. Your Welcome Week schedule will include the following:
  • Convocation - your official induction as a member of the USI community
  • A picnic with faculty and staff from your academic school
  • Programs on what you need to know about your first class, academic support, University resources
  • Meetings for campus residents, commuter students, and nontraditional students
  • A late-night event at the Recreation and Fitness Center including volleyball, swimming, ping pong, card and board games, hoops, and foosball!
  • Student volunteers to help you locate your classes, so you won't look lost on your first day!
  • Movies, meals, music, games, community service, and sporting events - all sponsored by some of USI's student organizations!

Do my parents attend?

Most parents attend the USI Eagle Roundup before leaving for home.  However, families are invited to our Thursday activities and Convocation on Friday morning.

How do I register for Welcome Week?
In previous years, students were required to register for Welcome Week. As of 2008, registration is no longer required. Welcome Week events are now open to all new students, and new students are invited to attend any events they choose.
