Dr. Glenna G. Bower

Glenna G. Bower is a Professor in the Kinesiology & Sport Department and Associate Dean of the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development with a concentration in Sport Administration from the University of Louisville, an M.A. in Physical Education with a concentration in Adult Fitness from Indiana State University and a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of Southern Indiana with a minor in Psychology.  Prior to becoming Professor, and Associate Dean Bower served as the Chair of t, an adjunct instructor in the Sport Administration Program at the University of Louisville, and as Assistant Director of Recreation Fitness and Wellness at USI.  Bower also served in corporate fitness at Mead Johnson Nutritionals and General Electric in Evansville, IN and Ameritech in Chicago, IL.

Bower was the recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Professor Award at the University of Southern Indiana. This is the highest award that a person can achieve on campus. She teaches a wide variety of sport management courses including Career Preparation for Sport Management majors; Sport Facility and Event Management; Sport Facility Management; and Sport Event Management. She is currently scheduled to teach Managing Sport Organizations. 

Bower’s main research area is mentoring to advance women in leadership positions within sport. In addition to the textbook, Women as Leaders in Sport: Impact and Influence, Bower published three editions of the book entitled A Guide to Careers and Field Experiences in Sport and Physical Activity.  Her other scholarly work includes five book chapters and 46 publications to a variety of journals such as NINE, Journal of Athlete Development and Experience, Sport Management Education Journal, Advancing Women in Leadership, Mentoring and Tutoring, Women Sports and Physical Activity Journal (WSPAJ), ICHPERD*SD Journal, Recreational Sports Journal, Health Education, and the Indiana IAHPERD Journal.  She has made more than 60 presentations to various scholarly associations at the State, Regional, and National levels including the European Association for Sport Management (EASM), the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD),  the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education (NAKPEHE), the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD), and the Indiana Recreational Sports Association (IRSA).  She has also accumulated more than a million dollars in grants and event programming.

Bower was the recipient of several awards including the 2018 USI Distinguished Professor Award, the 2017 USI Alumni Phenomenal Woman Award, the 2015 USI Faculty Recognition Award, the 2015 Midwest Indiana Association of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Midwest Scholar, 2013 Indiana Association for Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Sport Management Award, the 2012 Indiana Association for Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Leadership Award, the 2009 USI Outstanding Academic Advisor Award,  the 2009 National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award, the 2009 Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD) Pathfinder Award, the 2008 American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Mabel Lee Award (highest award a young professor may receive), and the 2007 Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Young Professional Award. She was also inducted into the 2015 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame - Silver Anniversary Team. 

Bower has served in several state, regional, and national organizations. She served as the Vice President for Publications for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS); an active member of the Indiana Sport Management Council; the Diversity and Social Justice Committee for the Midwest District. Bower  worked the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
