The University of Southern Indiana Theatre will stage David Rabe’s play In the Boom Boom Room Wednesday, April 10 to Saturday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 17 to Sunday, April 21.

The production will be presented at USI Theatre, 3001 Igleheart Avenue. Curtain time is 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21. Scott LaFeber, associate professor of theatre, is directing the play.

In the Boom Boom Room, one of Rabe’s first plays, opened in November 1973 in New York with Madeline Kahn and Charles Durning in the cast.

LaFeber said, “The Boom Boom Room is a place where the action through “gold” is illuminated. The last lines of Act 1 (“I wanna be golden. I gotta be golden.”) show us that this is where people can “be golden” in many ways – especially through fantasy and their self-esteem.

“Although the play takes place in Philadelphia and exploits the energy of the northeastern corridor, it is pertinent to our USI community through the themes of fears of young people and the inability for them to settle,” he said.

“Chrissy, the shallow, conniving go-go dancer, “makes it” in the end, by desperately trying to assert and empower herself through relationships and an abusive past,” explained LaFeber.

For the USI production, Chrissy is played by Jessica Corbett, a USI senior. Local actor Steve Small is Harold. Others in the cast are Susan Evans, Jami Wiseman, Erin Monahan, Rachelle Turner, Chad Blaylock, Jason McCord, Leo Kempf, Joe Geary, Selah Specht, and Aaron Bonds.

Tickets for In the Boom Boom Room are $9 for adults; $7 for seniors (60+), /children/student (other than USI Students), and $3 for USI students. Information and reservations are available by calling 422-3970. Content is for mature audiences.
