USI to hold week of events promoting media literacy

October 21, 2019

The University of Southern Indiana will host events on campus from Monday, October 21 through Friday, October 25 in recognition of National Media Literacy Week.

On Monday, October 21, students entering the David L. Rice Library will be encouraged to store their cell phones and create a "smartphone-free library" in order to raise awareness of media exposure and constant media access. Rice Library will also host a Facebook Live stream at 2 p.m. Friday, October 25 highlighting techniques to find credible news and academic sources.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to identify "fake news" and receive information on media literacy in the University Center Breezeway during midday hours Monday, October 21 - Wednesday, October 23. A workshop for USI faculty on identifying "fake news" in the classroom will be held on Thursday, October 24.

All USI Media Literacy Week events are held in junction with National Media Literacy Week, presented by the National Association for Media Literacy Education.
