Sponn and Logel named directors

July 16, 2021

The University of Southern Indiana Procurement Services and Risk Management departments have announced new appointments in their offices.

Jeff Sponn was promoted to Director of Procurement. He has served as Interim Director since Oct. 19, 2020, and assumed the position permanently Thursday, July 1. Prior to his appointment as Interim Director of Procurement, Sponn served as Assistant Director of Procurement.

As the Director, Sponn will provide administrative direction for the procurement operations of the University to ensure the requirements of the University are met in a timely, efficient, effective and ethical manner while meeting all legal and University compliance policies.

Sponn first joined USI as a student worker in 1994 and later as a full-time employee in July 1998. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from University of Southern Indiana.

Mark Logel was promoted to the position of Director of Risk Management as of Thursday, July 1. Logel first joined USI in November 2017 and has served as Assistant Director of Risk Management since that time.

As the Director of Risk Management, Logel leads all risk management activities and insurance related matters including claims involving auto, property, liability and worker's compensation to make sure the daily operations of the Risk Management Department are performed in a timely and efficient manner. Logel also provides the University community with insurance programs and procedures, develops risk mitigation strategies, provides review and recommendations for risk management contractual issues and develops program goals that support departmental and institutional strategic and enterprise risk management objectives.

Logel has bachelor's and master's degrees in business from the University of Evansville as well as an associate degree in Risk Management from The Institutes.

"Both of these appointments recognize the contributions that Jeff Sponn and Mark Logel have made to the University and continue to make," says Vice President of Finance and Administration Steven Bridges. "Jeff brings a deep working knowledge of USI but is also active in statewide and national procurement groups. This unique combination of talents makes him the perfect fit for our Director of Procurement. He is a solutions-oriented leader who makes a positive difference at USI daily."

Bridges also remarked, "Mark brings a wealth of experience to his new position as the primary risk manager on campus. His work to elevate the awareness of this increasingly important function at the University has not gone unnoticed. He has developed a rapport with key areas on campus to assist USI in the mitigation of risk in a progressive fashion."
