On June 30, 2017, USI Outreach and Engagement welcomed the Phelps family to campus for an exclusive tour. Shelby, Jordan, Sandy and Tom Phelps won an auction at the annual Marian Educational Outreach (MEO) Gala. MEO is a nonprofit program in Evansville that provides funding to Evansville Catholic Diocesan Schools for special education initiatives.
At the gala, the Phelps family bid on a swag basket of USI goodies, which included a VIP tour of the University. Stephanie El Tawil, USI Opportunity Development, gave the winning family a behind the scenes view of USI.
“I really wanted to show them things that they would not see on other tours,” said El Tawil. “We went up to the library and saw a whole view of campus. We also got Starbucks, because everybody loves Starbucks.”
The group toured the pre-physical therapy department in the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education, which was a specific request of the Phelps family. The group went to the Physical Activities Center and got an update on the renovations that are going to benefit the Pott College, as well.
President Bennett, Dean Zane Mitchell and Daniela Vidal joined the group for lunch. To make the afternoon a little more special, the group met Archie the Eagle and took a memorable picture with him.
“That is a big part of my job,” said El Tawil, “building relationships, bringing the community in to see what we have to offer and showing people a fun time here at USI.”
“They really had a nice time getting a bird’s-eye view (excuse the pun) of the University,” El Tawil joked.
