Searching for a new job can be stressful and overwhelming and the interview process can leave you feeling the same way. These five tips will calm your nerves and prepare you for the next step in your career.
Dress to impress
Interviews are your chance to shine and show companies what you can do. Start off by dressing professionally and make a good first impression. For men, you can’t go wrong with a suit and tie. For women, a pant suit is a great choice with the option to swap out pants for a matching skirt. When in doubt, be more conservative. Try to stay away from bright and flashy prints. Make sure your outfit is freshly ironed to make for a complete look.
Nothing shows passion for a certain position like doing background research. Visit the company’s website and grab some context. Knowing the basics about a company will allow for easy conversation during an interview.
Greet the search committee with a vibrant smile and a firm handshake. You know what you are capable of and now is your chance to show them. Having a positive attitude will go a long way.
Know your resume
Your resume should portray the best version of you. However, it is important to keep in mind that your resume needs to accurately align with your abilities. When answering interview questions, you want to elaborate on your resume while also speaking about things not listed.
Send a thank you note
A quick email or even a handwritten thank you note after your interview lets the company know you appreciate their time and you are grateful for their consideration. Little gestures like this can really stand out when there is a large pool of applicants.
