Educational Partnership Agreement

Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC Crane) and the University of Southern Indiana formed an educational partnership agreement enhancing USI faculty research and student learning opportunities while enhancing research and commercialization of technology residing at Crane. The education partnership covered USI’s Pott College of Science and Engineering and Romain College of Business. This process has been facilitated by USI’s Center for Applied Research and Crane’s Office of Technology Transfer.

“This is an important partnership for the University,” said former USI President H. Ray Hoops. “The partnership with NSWC Crane has great potential for USI to advance the timeline for expanding our applied research capabilities and outreach to regional business and industry.”

Partnership Intermediary Agreement

USI and NSWC Crane operated under a Memorandum of Understanding beginning in 2007 and a Partnership Intermediary Agreement since 2009. The ongoing partnership, along with the resulting increase in learning opportunities for USI faculty and students, led to the creation of a full-time position at USI dedicated to management of the USI-Crane partnership. In addition, the partnership helps support several components of the University’s strategic plan, including enhanced experiential learning opportunities and providing leadership to both Indiana and the region.

Some successes of the first five years of collaboration include:

  • A nationally recognized best practice, the Innovation Discovery Events, co-developed by USI’s Sue Ellsperman and Gene Recker and Crane’s John Dement, now adopted throughout the Department of Defense.
  • The award winning Technology Commercialization Academy (TCA), which has produced over 4 startup companies.
  • Support of NSWC Crane STEM programs, which have been recognized by the MIRA Awards as a best program in the state of Indiana.
  • Creation of the I-69 Innovation Corridor initiative, which is building a technology-based innovation ecosystem in southern Indiana.
  • National recognition in the field of Technology Transfer and multiple presentations at regional and national Federal Lab Consortium and DoD Conferences.

Partnership Intermediary Agreement (Renewed)

USI and NSWC Crane signed a renewed PIA on Monday, June 22, 2015 during an event held on the USI campus, where the 2015 TCA students showcased their projects to representatives from USI and NSWC Crane as well as other guests.
