Description: Do you have a student in grades 5 - 8 who is interested in learning about coding and engineering but don’t know where to start? We can help! For fall 2020, the Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center is offering a remote introductory club designed to integrate these two concepts at a pace that leaves room for exploration and fun. During weekly club meetings, students will be introduced to Scratch (a free, online block-based coding language) and Makey Makey kits, a simple piece of invention hardware that connects your computer to the world around you. By combining these two tools, your child can expand their ability to think creatively, reason systematically, and even invent ways to turn everyday items into touchpads. By the end of the fall session, our goal is to for each participant to walk away with a “Maker’s Mindset” and have confidence that they can change the world! Best of all, each participant will be provided with a Makey Makey kit to continue to use and learn after the club concludes. This program was created to supplement at-home learning for virtual and homeschool families and to serve as an extension program for students enrolled in the physical school setting. We have added additional meeting times to accommodate a variety of educational placements and would love for your child to join us!
Dates: Eight (8) Weekly Club Meetings - Club meetings take place each Wednesday beginning September 30 thru November 18.
Times: Club meetings are offered three times on Wednesdays. When you register, you will be asked to select a meeting time that is convenient for your family. Your child will be enrolled in the course you select unless the course number you select reaches capacity. **Note: Regardless of your current educational arrangement, you may register for any of the courses below. Simply pick the one that works best with your schedule.
Audience: The Coding for Kids Club is for students in grades 5 - 8 who are new to Scratch programming and Makey Makey. Note: Our mission for this program is to get students who have never had the opportunity to learn basic coding involved. Please do not enroll your child if they have a good working knowledge of either of these tools (Scratch and Makey Makey). Intermediates and experts will likely become bored.
Necessary Items not Provided by Program: Your child will need access to a home computer with a web camera and reliable internet. Various readily available household items will be necessary throughout the program (e.g. aluminum foil, paper clips, string, vegetables, etc.) These items will be communicated with participants in advance.
Capacity: The capacity for each course number is twelve (12). When a course fills, the website will be updated to reflect that we are no longer accepting registrations for that particular course number.
Cost: $50/per student (includes Makey Makey kit). Half-price ($25) scholarships are available for students on free/reduced lunch. To apply for a scholarship, please email Allison Grabert (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Deadline to Register: Registration has closed.
