USI women’s basketball announces pair of NLI’s

The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team has announced that 6’2” center Emily Meier (Mackinaw, Illinois) and 5’10” guard/forward Jessica Williams (Princeton, Indiana) have signed national letters of intent for the 2003-04 season. They are the first two players to sign with head coach Rick Stein’s Screaming Eagles this fall.

Meier is a senior at University High School in Normal, Illinois where she averaged 12 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a junior. Meier earned second-team All-Area and All-Conference honors for her efforts.

“Emily is off to a great start, doing everything we had hoped for and more,” UHS coach Bob Morris said. “USI is getting an outstanding person and an excellent player.”

Stein is excited to have a player of Emily’s ability come to USI. “Emily is a great fit into our program and our style of play,” Stein said. “She is a strong player with good hands and she runs the floor well.

“Emily also is a good defender and can rebound on both ends of the floor,” Stein continued. “Her best basketball is still ahead of her and it is exciting to know that she will be playing it here at USI.”

Williams is a senior at Princeton Community High School in Princeton, Indiana where she has earned All-Big 8 and All-County honors in both her sophomore and junior campaigns. As a junior, Williams led PCHS with 12.9 points and 4.0 assists per game. She also grabbed 5.9 rebounds per game during her sophomore campaign.

Williams also led the PCHS in scoring as a sophomore and in assists as a freshman and sophomore.

A member of the National Honor Society, Williams has been on the A-B Honor Roll for seven semesters, has been named the “Student of the Month”, and has earned the Academic Award for Softball and Volleyball.

“Jessica is a big guard with an all-around game.” Stein explained. “Being a local player, our staff has had the opportunity to watch her play in high school, AAU, and in our summer camps. If Jessica gets stronger, her play will only continue to improve.”
