Newsome signs with USI basketball
The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team announced the signing of Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) to a letter of intent for the 2002-03 season. Newsome is the fourth player to sign with USI and Head Coach Rick Herdes.
Newsome, a 6’8” 253 center/forward, was a two-year starter on a Central Florida Community College team that was 41-22 over the last two seasons. The St. Petersburg, Florida, native posted a career average of 5.5 ppg and 4.3 rpg.
A graduate of Dixie Hollins High School, Newsome was much improved as a sophomore despite suffering a stress fracture. He averaged 7.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg while raising his field goal percentage 8.7 points and his free throw percentage 26.5 percent.
“Reque can run and has good instincts on the court,” said CFCC Head Coach Gene Smithson, who has coached numerous players who have been drafted to the National Basketball Association, including such stars as Antoine Carr, Xavier McDaniel, and Cliff Levingston. “He has good fundamentals and understanding of the game. Reque knows how to play his role on a team and I believe he will continue to improve as long as he works hard to develop his skills.”
Herdes said, “Reque is a very athletic young man who can really run the floor. His defensive talents are super and his desire to be a student athlete is what this program is all about.”
