USI menís basketball makes it seven in a row on the road in the GLVC

#20 University of Southern Indiana (22-5, 16-4 GLVC): 90
@University of Missouri-St. Louis (5-22, 2-18 GLVC): 75

The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team won its seventh straight Great Lakes Valley Conference road game with a 90-75 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI finishes the 2002-03 regular season with a 22-5 overall record and a 16-4 mark in the league, while UMSL loses its 19th straight and finishes the year 5-22 overall, 2-18 GLVC.

The victory also marks the seventh time since the 1992-93 season that USI has won 16 or more games in the conference. USI, which started GLVC play 0-2 back in December, has won 15 of the last 16 league contests since January 4.

With the game tied 13-13 in the first half, the Screaming Eagles exploded on a 20-2 run to blow the game open and lead 42-28 at the intermission. The second half featured UMSL cutting the lead down to 11 points on several occasions, but that was as close as the Rivermen would get to the Eagles.

The Eagles had a very balanced attack in St. Louis today with six players scoring in double digits. Junior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) led USI with 19 points.

Harris was followed in the scoring column by senior forward Diondíre Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and junior center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) with 12 points each sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) with 11 points and senior guard/forward Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana) and sophomore forward Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana) with 10 points each.

Newsome, whose 12 points tied a season-high, led the team on the board with eight rebounds. Harris was second for USI with seven boards.

The Eagles begin GLVC Tournament action as the number two seed Thursday, March 6, at Roberts Stadium. USI will play Saint Joseph's College at 6 p.m. For more information and the GLVC Tournament pairings, check out the GLVC menís basketball web site at
