Givens named honorable mention All-American by D-II Bulletin
University of Southern Indiana senior forward Diond’re Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) was named honorable mention All-American in the April 2003 issue of Division II Bulletin.
Givens led the Screaming Eagles to a 25-7 overall record and the NCAA Division II Tournament sweet 16. The senior communications major finished his career by scoring a career-best 32 points in the Great Lakes Regional Championship loss to Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Givens registered a team-best 14.6 ppg, was fourth on the squad with 4.5 rpg, and shot 52.5 percent from the field (201-383). The Mt. Vernon, Indiana, native turned around his free throw shooting as a senior, raising his percentage from 42.6 percent (20-47) as a junior to 84.1 percent (58-69) in 2002-03.
Compared to past Eagles, Givens finishes his USI career ranked sixth all-time in scoring (1,262 points), tied for sixth in rebounding (565 rebounds), and tied for the all-time lead in games played (123). He also ranks fourth all-time in field goals made (556).
In addition to being named honorable mention All-American, Givens was named first team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and second team All-Great Lakes Region by the National Association of Basketball coaches and Daktronics.
“This award is the culmination of four years of hard work by Diond’re,” said USI head coach Rick Herdes. “His contributions to USI increased each season as he matured and took on a more prominent role on the team.”
The Eagles averaged better than 25 wins a season since 1993-94, have won 20 or more games 11 straight years, and appeared in the NCAA Division II Tournament 10 of the last 11 seasons.
