Van Winkle named to Division II Bulletin All-Freshman squad
University of Southern Indiana freshman forward Geoff Van Winkle was named to the Division II Bulletin 2003-04 All-Freshman Team. Van Winkle was the only player of the 10 member team from the GLVC and one of two from the NCAA II Great Lakes Region.
The native of Ferdinand, Indiana, also was the only freshman on the Division II Bulletin team to appear in the Division II Elite Eight.
Van Winkle played in all 35 games for the NCAA Division II National Finalist. He averaged 8.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and led USI with 72 three-point field goals made. The 72 long range buckets were just seven short of the USI single season record of 79 set by Robin Clark in 1989-90. He shot 45.8 percent from the field (98-214), 43.1 percent from long range (72-167), and 84.1 percent from the line (37-44) for the season.
The GLVC Freshman of the Year averaged 10.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game during conference action, shooting 50.4 percent from the field (68-135) and 49.5 percent from three-point field goal range (49-99).
Van Winkle is the second USI player to be named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman team. USIís Cris Brunson was named to the squad in 2001-02.
