USI takes round one with KWC

Ė The 24th-ranked University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team completed a sweep of a four-game homestand and won its fifth in a row with an 86-64 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 12-7 overall, 7-6 GLVC.

The victory also propels USI into a first place tie with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the GLVC. SIUE lost to the University of Indianapolis 87-77 at home this afternoon.

The Screaming Eagles, who led the contest from start to finish, jumped out of the gate in the first half by shooting 58.6 percent from the field (17-29) and 63.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc (7-11). USI led by as many as 20 points, 48-28, and took a 50-36 margin into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles maintained the margin and increased it to 29 points, 86-57, with 3:20 to play.

USI had five players score in double-digits, led by senior forward/center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) with 16 points. Sophomore forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) followed Holbrook with 15 points, while freshman guard Carl Richburg (Mason, Ohio) added 14 points senior center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) dropped in 12 points and junior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) came off the bench to score 11 points.

Thompson also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to help the Eagles out rebounded the Panthers 35-27. Richburg and Holbrook also dished out game-high seven assists each.

The Eagles go on the road next week in the GLVC. The squad will travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, on February 3 to play Northern Kentucky University and to Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 5 to play the University of Indianapolis. Game time is 6:45 p.m. at NKU and 2 p.m. at Indianapolis.

The final homestand of the 2004-05 regular season will be February 10 and February 12 when USI hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University. The February 12 USI-Lewis doubleheader will be Senior Day and Homecoming for the Eagles.
