USI claims a share of GLVC crown

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ó The University of Southern Indiana menís basketball team clinched at least a share of the conference regular season crown and the number one seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a 78-51 victory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon. USI raises its record to 21-4 overall and 16-2 in the GLVC, while UMSL falls to 8-17 overall, 4-14 GLVC.
The Screaming Eaglesí magic number to claim the GLVC crown outright is down to one. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville stayed in the race with an 83-53 victory over Bellarmine University, but the University of Indianapolis was eliminated from contention with a loss to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 82-79.
USI has won six GLVC regular season crowns and has reached 16 conference wins eight times since 1992.
The Eagles claimed Saturdayís victory with hot first half shooting and tough second half defense. USI shot 60 percent from the field in the first stanza (15-25) and led at halftime, 40-29. The Eagles held the Rivermen to 33.3 percent from the field (6-18) and to only just three field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
USI senior forward/center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri), who was playing in his hometown for the final time as an Eagle, led the team with 22 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) followed Holbrook with 18 points, while senior center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) dropped in 12 points.
The Eagles conclude the season closer to home with a pair of road games next week, beginning in Owensboro, Kentucky, against Kentucky Wesleyan College February 24. The regular season finale is February 26 in Louisville, Kentucky, at Bellarmine.
