USI picked to win GLVC's West Division
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team was picked to win the West Division of the GLVC in a vote by division coaches. Saint Joseph's College was predicted to win the East Division.
Returning to lead USI is a trio of honorable mention All-GLVC performers in senior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida), senior guard David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky), and junior forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana).
Thompson is the team's leading returning scorer and rebounder with 11.3 ppg and 9.2 rpg in 2004. The preseason All-American also had a team-high 12 double-doubles, which ranks second at USI to former Division II Player of the Year Chris Bowles' 18 double-doubles in 1991-92.
Van Winkle was fifth on the team in scoring with 9.3 ppg and sank a team-best 75 three-point field goals, while Bryant averaged 8.7 ppg and was second on the squad with 94 assists.
As a team, USI was 27-5 overall and won the GLVC regular season title with an 18-2 conference mark. The Eagles also won their first GLVC Tournament championship and appeared in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 12th time in 13 seasons before bowing out in the Great Lakes Regional semifinals.
