Hopf makes it official and signs with USI
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team announced the signing of 6'8" senior forward Brandon Hopf to a national letter of intent. Hopf is the first player to sign with USI and Head Coach Rick Herdes this fall.
Currently a senior at Forest Park High School, Hopf has been named first team All-State by Hoosier Basketball Magazine and was featured on the cover. He also was named to the Indiana Basketball Guide's Preseason Tremendous 26 team and second team All-State by Hickory Husker.
The 2005-06 Indiana All-Star candidate helped lead FPHS to the Indiana State 2A championship last spring. Hopf averaged 17 points and 7.2 rebounds per game as a junior and was the state final's Most Valuable Player after setting the IHSAA record for rebounds and field goals in the championship game.
The native of Ferdinand, Indiana, was a teammate of current Screaming Eagle Geoff Van Winkle when FPHS advanced to the 2A championship game in 2002-03.
"Brandon is a tremendous signee for us that I feel the Division I programs have made a real mistake on," said Herdes. "A lot of the credit in getting Brandon to sign with USI goes to Assistant Coach Marc Hostetter and former Forest Park player Geoff Van Winkle.
"Brandon has great hands and footwork. He also can shoot the ball from three-point range, making him a good fit in our system at the power forward position."
The Screaming Eagles open the 2005-06 regular season campaign November 11-13 in the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, Florida. USI's first round opponent is Caldwell College at 8 p.m. Friday.
