Thompson named GLVC Player of the Week
– University of Southern Indiana senior forward Chris Thompson
(Starke, Florida) was named the GLVC Player of the Week for his efforts in helping the Screaming Eagles to the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic championship and a 3-0 record to start the year.
The Most Outstanding Player of the Tip-Off Classic, Thompson posted three straight double-doubles and tied a Tip-Off Classic single-game record by shooting 92.9 percent from the field (13-14) against Caldwell College.
In the first win of the year over Caldwell (88-71), Thompson posted a career-high 35 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. In the win over #13 Nebraska-Omaha (76-71), he recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds. The preseason honorable mention All-American dropped in a team-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the championship game victory over Columbus State University (90-86).
Thompson averaged 22.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game to begin the year. He also shot 75 percent from the field (27-36) 60 percent from three-point field goal range (3-5), and 84.6 percent from the charity strip (11-13). The 75 percent shooting percentage from the field set a Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic record.
In addition to his numbers in the regular season games, Thompson averaged 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in exhibition games against the University of Tennessee and the University of Louisville.
The Screaming Eagles open the 2005-06 home schedule Tuesday by hosting Robert Morris College at 7:30 p.m.
