USI men's basketball signs a pair on signing day

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team announced the signing of a pair of players forward Nate Schumacher (Evansville, Indiana) and guard/forward Nick Duncheon (Montgomery, Indiana) to NCAA National Letters of Intent for 2007-08. The players are the first players to sign with USI Head Coach Rick Herdes in the early signing period.

Schumacher, a graduate of Central High School (Evansville, Indiana), will transfer to USI after playing for John A. Logan College this year. The 6-foot-6 forward began his collegiate career on November 3 when he scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Volunteers season-opening victory over Harmony School. The Volunteers are 3-0 to start the year and Schumacher is averaging 12 points and seven rebounds in the three contests.

Last year at CHS, Schumacher was named first team All-SIAC, Couier and Press All-Metro, and Academic All-State in 2005-06 after averaging 16.2 ppg and 12.4 rpg. He was named second team All-SIAC and All-Metro as a junior and led the Tri-State in rebounding the last three years.

"Nate is off to a great start at John A. Logan and continues to develop as a player," said Herdes. "He is a great rebounder, especially on the offensive glass. We look for him to compete for the power-forward position next season and play a major role on the boards."

Signing to begin his collegiate career at USI is Duncheon (pronounced Dungeon), who will be playing his final season at Barr Reeve High School (Montgomery, Indiana) in 2006-07. He was named All-Area Player of the Year and first team All-Sectional by the Washington Times Herald and first team All-Southwestern Indiana by the Evansville Courier and Press. Duncheon earned the awards by leading BRHS with 17.9 ppg, a 57.2 field goal percentage, a 78.4 free throw percentage, 6.8 rpg, and 45 blocked shots as a junior.

As a sophomore, the 6-foot-6 forward was a Washington Time Herald first team All-Area and All-Sectional selection after averaging leading the Vikings with 13.4 ppg and 5.7 rpg.

The last two seasons, Duncheon has been first team All-Blue Chip Conference performer and was invited to the IBCA/IHSAA Top 100 Underclassmen Showcase.

"Nick is a great shooter from the outside," stated Herdes. "He has the size to play small forward, but has the range from the outside to play the shooting guard position. Nick is very similar in his abilities to (Geoff) Van Winkle and (Melvin) Hall."

The Screaming Eagles open the 2005-06 campaign Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CST) in the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic against North Georgia College and State University. The season opener for the Screaming Eagles is November 15 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Wayne State University.
