USI continues homestand against Judson
EVANSIVLLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team reaches the halfway point of its five-game homestand when it welcomes Judson College to the Physical Activities Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip off. The USI-Judson match-up is the second half of a doubleheader with the USI women's team playing the University of Illinois-Springfield at 5:15 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles have started the 2006-07 campaign with a 5-0 record, reaching that plateau for the 10th time in the last 14 years. USI also has outscored its first five opponents by an average of 24.8 points per game (ppg).
A big part of the early success has been the play of seniors Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana), Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida), and Marty Wise (New Orleans, Indiana).
Hall, who set the USI single-season record for three-point field goals last year, is off to an even faster pace than a year ago. The senior guard, who is leading the team with 17.4 ppg, is 11 three-point field goals ahead of last year's pace and has led the team in scoring each of the last four games.
Sullivan, who has been wowing the Eagle fans with spectacular dunks, follows Hall in the scoring column with 14.8 ppg, is second on the squad with 4.6 rebounds per game (rpg), and ranks third on the team with 3.8 assists per game. The senior center also has been an imposing force on defense with eight blocks this season.
With the opposition double teaming Sullivan on the boards, Wise has been taking advantage and leads USI with 7.8 rpg. The senior forward rounds out the USI double-figure scorers with 11.8 ppg.
The Eagles of Judson (1-5) are coming off their first win of the season in their victory over North Central College, 86-74. Junior forward Joe Gonnam leads Judson through six games with 14.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
Tuesday's meeting between USI and Judson will be the first meeting between the two programs.
