Allen, Bowman sign with USI men's basketball
Eagles sign final recruits for the fall
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team announced that junior center Jimmy Allen (Vallejo, California) and junior forward Shaun Bowman (Brooklyn, New York) have accepted scholarships for the 2007-08 season. Allen and Bowman become the sixth and seventh players added to the USI roster this year.
Allen will be eligible to join the team at the semester break, while Bowman is eligible to join the team immediately.
Allen joins the USI men's basketball program after two seasons at Cuesta College, which is a part of the California Community College League and the Western State Conference. He was named honorable mention All-State in 2006-07 and earned All-Conference honors each season at Cuesta.
The 6-foot-10 center led the CCCL with 151 blocks as a freshman, while finishing second with 134 blocks as a sophomore. He also averaged 17.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in 32 starts as a sophomore and became one of nine players to score over 900 points in two seasons at Cuesta.
Allen attended Vallejo High School (Vallejo, California), but did not play high school basketball prior to beginning his collegiate career at Cuesta.
"Jimmy (Allen) will make an immediate impact once he joins the team in December," said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes. "He has the ability to dominate a game on defense, while making a major contribution as a scorer and rebounder."
Bowman transfers to USI after playing the last two seasons at Frank Phillips College (Borger, Texas). He averaged 7.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in 2006-07 and 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest in 2005-06.
Prior to attending FPC, Bowman lettered in basketball at Bishop Laughlin Memorial High School (Brooklyn, New York).
"Shaun (Bowman) is a tough competitor who will help us on the glass, while providing some offensive punch," Herdes said. "Shaun could fill a role similar to that which was played by Keith Christmas and Marty Wise last season."
Allen and Bowman join the 2007-08 recruiting class that includes forwards Norman Plummer (Cincinnati, Ohio), Anthony Pimble (Bronx, New York) and Nate Schumacher (Evansville, Indiana) guard Tyson Schnitker and guard/forward Nick Duncheon (Montgomery, Indiana) Pimble, Plummer, and Schnitker joined the team this spring, while Schumacher and Duncheon signed with the Eagles during the fall.
