Eagles send seniors out with win

at Southern Indiana (10-17, 5-14 GLVC): 78

EVANSVILLE, Ind.The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team sent its senior class out with a 78-68 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (10-17, 5-14 GLVC) used a 17-2 run to overcome an early five-point deficit and build a 10-point lead seven minutes into the contest.

The Tritons (7-20, 4-15 GLVC) cut USI's advantage to three points (24-21) later in the half, but the Screaming Eagles used an 18-4 run to build their largest lead of the contest (42-25) with less than two minutes to play in the period.

After going into the break with a 42-30 halftime lead, the Eagles built their advantage to as many as 16 points in the second half before settling for the 10-point win.

As a team, the Eagles shot 52.8 percent from the field, including 53.6 percent in the first half.

Marshay Jolly

Senior forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 19 points, 11 of which came in the first half, four assists, and three steals, while freshman guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) added 16 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) chipped in 15 points and two assists, while junior forward/center Brittany Neuman (Huntingburg, Indiana) tallied her second straight double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Missouri-St. Louis was led by junior forward Mary Slaughter, who finished with 24 points and five rebounds.

For USI, Saturday marked the end of Baines' and Jolly's careers in and Eagles' uniform. Baines averaged a career-high 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a senior and finished her career ranked seventh all-time at USI in career scoring (1,209) and 11th all-time at USI in career rebounding (496). Jolly finished the season with a career-high 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
