Late goal lifts Eagles to 5-4 win against Missouri Baptist

University of Southern Indiana (3-1): 5
@Missouri Baptist University (0-4): 4

University of Southern Indiana womenís soccer sophomore forward Brooklyn Wilke (Evansville, Indiana) scored a goal at the 86-minute mark to lift the Screaming Eagles to a 5-4 victory over Missouri Baptist University Wednesday night in St. Louis, Missouri.

Wilke was set up after freshman midfielder Kara Marcum (Evansville, Indiana) drove a free kick past Missouri Baptist goalkeeper Megan Mercer and off the right side goal post. Wilke capitalized on the ricochet to put the ball into the back of the net and give the Eagles their third victory in four tries.

USI (3-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior back/midfielder Lisa Stucki (Evansville, Indiana) found sophomore forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) for a goal less than five minutes into the game.

Shetler set up freshman Rebecca Cripe (Argos, Indiana) for USIís second goal of the contest, this one coming at 20 minutes into the match.

The Eagles saw their 2-0 lead evaporate with in 15 minutes as Missouri-Baptist scored at the 29 and 35-minute marks of the first half to tie the match at two goals each.

Less than three minutes later, Cripe scored her second goal of the match, this time using a feed from Stucki, to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead late in the first period. Missouri-Baptist, however, tied the match again as it scored with less than five minutes to go in the first period to send the two teams into halftime with three goals apiece.

After playing nearly 18 minutes of the second half at a 3-3 tie, Cripe put the Eagles back on top with her third goal of the contest. Cripe used a feed from Marcum and freshman forward Megan Williams (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles saw their lead slip away once more, as Missouri Baptist scored with just over five minutes to play, before Wilke put USI ahead for good.

USI returns to action this Saturday, September 13, when it travels to Memphis, Tennessee, to take on second-ranked Christian Brothers University. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
