Eagles get back on track against Indianapolis

@Southern Indiana (5-9-0 3-4-0 GLVC): 2
Indianapolis (6-6-1, 3-3-1 GLVC): 1 Box Score

– The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team built a 2-0 lead and then made a defensive stand in the final minutes to defeat the University of Indianapolis, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI remains in contention for a berth in the GLVC Tournament by raising its record to 5-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis falls to 6-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 GLVC.

Freshman midfielder Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana) put USI up 1-0 in the first half on a goal at 24:57. Senior back Lisa Stucki (Evansville, Indiana) set Collins up for the shot by collecting the ball outside the box after Indianapolis tried to clear a USI cross. The goal was Collins’ third of the season.

After halftime, USI junior midfielder Brooklyn Gant (Evansville, Indiana) scored the eventual game winner off a pass from Collins at the 52:23 mark. Collins took a lose ball near midfield and slipped a pass through to Gant for the goal. The goal was a team-leading fourth of the year for Gant.

Indianapolis made a game of it by cutting the USI lead in half with 1:35 to play on an unassisted goal by forward Molly Haag. The Eagles’ defense held firm in the final 90 seconds as the Greyhounds had several close calls, but could not muster another shot on goal.

USI is on the road for the remainder of the 2004 season. The Eagles begin a four-game road swing by playing at Lewis University on October 15 and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on October 17.

The final GLVC match of the year for the Eagles will be at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on October 23, while the final regular season match will be at Oakland City University on October 26.
